Rhapsody Quintet and Soprano Shin-Bouey to Perform at Three Churches, Mahone Bay

August 10, 2005

Rhapsody Quintet will be joined by soprano Sung Ha Shin-Bouey in The Palm Court at the Grand Hotel, a delightful program of music from the theatre and opera, Neapolitan songs, and popular show tunes to conclude the Mahone Bay Concert Series season on a note of fun, froth, and perhaps some nostalgia. The concert on Friday, August 19 at 8:00 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church will include such classics as Kiss of Fire, Puccini's O Mio Babbino Caro, some Lerner and Lowe, Cole Porter, and Agustin Lara's Granada.

Rhapsody Quintet has received rave reviews for their four recordings and performances of salon music, light classics, theatre music, and chamber music, and been featured performers throughout the Maritimes, in Ottawa, Toronto and at PEI's Indian River Festival. The individual members -- Anne Rapson, violin; John Rapson, clarinet; Shimon Walt, cello; Diana Torbert, piano; and Catherine Lofton, bass - are all important and well established leaders of Nova Scotia's professional musical scene as performers and teachers. (Shimon Walt, of course, is the dedicated artistic adviser to Music at the Three Churches.) Their place at the musical heart of Nova Scotia is demonstrated by their participation in the re-opening of Point Pleasant Park and the Public Gardens after the devastation of Hurricane Juan, and their performance at the Premier's Dinner in honour of the first recipients of the Order of Nova Scotia. Their latest CD, Rhapsody in Red, was recorded in Nova Scotia' historic provincial Legislature, has garnered rave reviews ("A splendid disc" - U.K. Light Music Society).

The Quintet arranges and adapts orchestral and piano music to suit their unique instrumentation, and this evening's performance will include several pieces arranged by John Rapson or their guest artist, soprano Sung Ha Shin-Bouey.

Sung Ha Shin-Bouey, currently the director of Voice and Choral Music at the University of Prince Edward Island, has performed at prestigious concert halls and festivals throughout North America and Europe, including the Aldeburgh Festival in London and as a European finalist in the 1988 Luciano Pavarotti International Competition in Modena. She has performed with many choirs, including Kings College Choir of Cambridge, Aldeburgh Festival Choir, London (England) Jubilate Singers and the Vancouver Bach Choir. She is frequently heard on CBC Radio, and was featured in a BBC Television documentary about the Britten-Pears School of Music, an international school for advanced music studies.
