Halifax - Although it would be nice, it is not usually possible to have a full orchestra play at a party, special event or wedding ceremony. When we are lucky enough to have live music at these types of events in Atlantic Canada, it is often The Rhapsody Quintet entertaining. Since the mid-eighties, The Rhapsody Quintet has become a popular chamber music ensemble playing live concerts, private engagements, schools, corporate events and royal dinners throughout the Maritimes and Ontario. On Friday, January 21, at 8pm they are bringing an evening of enchantment to the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium with Symphony Nova Scotia under the baton of guest conductor Daniel Warren.

"We are very excited to play this concert with our colleagues, friends and closest fans in our hometown. The last show gave us so much inspiration and energy and the support was overwhelming," said Shimon Walt, Rhapsody's cellist. The Rhapsody Quintet also features Anne Rapson (violin), Walt, Catherine Loftin (double bass), John Rapson (clarinet) and Diana Torbert (piano). These musicians are all important members of Nova Scotia's local music community as music professors, teachers, recording artists, regular players with Symphony Nova Scotia, and soloists.

The Quintet's last concert with Symphony Nova Scotia in early 2003 left the audience on their feet and critics raving. The Chronicle Herald's music critic, Stephen Pedersen, described the Rhapsody Quintet as "smooth as creamed honey" and said that they accurately evoked the era the music was targeted for, "1910 to the Wall Street Crash." In 2003, the group also accepted the honour of performing to a standing ovation in Ottawa as part of the National Arts Centre's Atlantic Scene Festival.

Friday night's concert comes on the tails of their newest CD Rhapsody in Red, released in early December at Province House. Rhapsody in Red is aptly named as it was recorded in the House's historic Red Chamber featuring the recently acquired and restored vintage 1910 Pleyel piano.

The concert is sponsored by The Globe and Mail and the Greater Halifax Partnership. Tickets are available by calling the Cohn Box Office at 902-494-3820 or visiting www.symphonynovascotia.ca.
